    It's not about the shoes

    I read this book when I was just starting out as a runner. It gave me a good sense of my body and how to move with a good economy of effort. Part of that was developing a stride that minimized impact and strain; you can call it forefoot or midfoot-striking. Dreyer's not interested much in shoes. He's really all about teaching you to use your body as an instrument of motion. In the end I've become accustomed to minimalist running shoes because they're light and they allow me to move my feet naturally. But it was important for me to understand this book before radically changing my gear.
