    Exciting Action and Stellar Characters

I couldn't say no to a book about phoenixes and strong women, and am so glad this book was created. The more I think about it, the more I love it. The magic is creative and opens endless possibilities, the mythology and world building are awesome, the action and relationships beg for page-turning, and I'm honestly dying for the second book. While I absolutely loved the story and all of its many, many surprising twists, and an ending that will no doubt lead to more adventures and thrills. I would love to see more of the magic return and learn more about it. But what really sold it for me were the characters. Every single one struck a chord with me. Veronyka is a wonderful hero, strong, brave, positive, and curious. I adore her and she felt like a friend. I admit that I dislike Val (which I was supposed to), but her twist definitely makes me want to know more about her. Tristan took a little while to get used to, but I found myself rooting for him as the story went on and understanding him. He didn't take the turn I thought he might, and it made me love him for it. And SEV!!! Sev is someone who needs more love and I want to see more of him. He's complex and interesting and I can't wait to see where he goes. The best thing about the characters is that they felt "real," and they didn't follow the tropes of most YA characters. I loved all of them and miss them already. The relationships between them were complex, particularly Val and Veronyka. This has been one of my favourite books so far this year and is worthy of all the hype it's been getting. I'm honestly so glad I could be swept up in its majesty and adventure.
