    Just read this one!

I loved this book. I picked this one up when I was really hoping to pull myself out of a reading slump...and it worked. You would think that I could easily write a nice gushy review of the wonderful story but I am finding it really hard to write a review because I am determined not to spoil this story for anyone else. I think that I thought that there would be some elements of horror in the story. I was wrong. This is really a science fiction story. I don't read a lot of science fiction but I really enjoyed this one. It made me think about things. There is really a whole world of possibilities presented in this story and while I realize that it is a work of fiction, it was really fun to imagine all of the scenerios. This story follows Jason. Jason is really a pretty normal guy. He is married with a teenage son. He is a professor at the local college and is really pretty happy with his life. I thought that Jason was a really solid character. He was pretty easy to get behind and I found myself really caring about him. I was cheering for him until the very end of the story and wanted to see him succeed. I loved the writing. This book was pretty fast paced and I found it really hard to put down. I read the whole book from cover to cover in less than 24 hours because I couldn't get it out of my head. I needed to read just one more chapter...and we all know how that goes. The book flowed largely due to the wonderful storytelling. The unbelievable became believable and the lines between fiction and fact blurred. I would highly recommend this book to fans of science fiction. I think anyone looking for something a little different may enjoy this one as well. I have read a couple of books that Blake Crouch co-authored and I enjoyed those but I do think that I prefer his solo efforts a bit more. I definitely plan to read more from this author very soon. I received a copy of this book from Crown Publishing via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

    Totally Different Sci Fi

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Science fiction isn’t usually my choice, but blended with a little philosophy, this was really, really good! Jason Dessen, a physics professor, leads a happy life. One night, he is knocked unconscious by a man in a geisha mask, and he awakens to find himself surrounded by people in hazmat suits. He soon realizes that this is an alternate universe and while he’s still Jason, he’s Jason the genius physicist who has created something mindbending. Something that transports you to not just an alternate universe, but a multiverse, with all the paths your life would have taken if your choices were different. Jason needs to get back to his “real” life, and the return trip is fantastical, strange, horrifying, terrifying. Unfortunately, I can’t say more than that or it would spoil the story. It will make you think about where you are in life, where you could be in life, what you want or need and why, and what lengths would you go to in order to keep, or regain, what you have. Do you really know all your facets? The story is sometimes hard to comprehend, but if you just go with the flow, it does keep you engaged. The writing is in that new simplistic style that seems to be gaining popularity: It’s like this. Page. After page. Sometimes. Drives me crazy. Well, it makes for a fairly quick read that will keep you turning the page for more. With all the action and special effects, I see this becoming a movie soon. “IF THERE ARE INFINITE WORLDS, HOW DO I FIND THE ONE THAT IS UNIQUELY, SPECIFICALLY MINE?”

    Exciting, but Not That Interesting

A little too much navel gazing for my taste. Also, there wasn't enough focus on the multiverse concept, which of course is fascinating science, although no longer new. I was reminded of the Bourne series. Non-stop chase scenes with a small amount of substance. The one sentence style with numerous paragraph breaks would be more appropriate in a script, which makes sense, since the author is a scriptwriter. Why all the negatives when I gave it 3 stars? Well, it was still eminently readable. I just wasn't blown away. And I could easily identify the excruciating effort in every line.
