    Cracking fantasy whodunit

This is a fast paced fantasy novel with a murder mystery plot and a good bit of romance as well! Both characters and plot are handled expertly, driving each other along to the inevitable conclusion. All the characters are great but I particularly loved Tomas Caraway, the failed Helmsman who is given a second chance, and Naeve Sorrow, the famous mercenary who turns out to have a weak spot after all. I loved the way the different characters were gradually drawn together. You feel the plot tightening around them until the book becomes impossible to put down. The second half is a relentless rollercoaster that left me breathless and a little bit teary. This is a cross genre novel in which the fantasy, whodunit and romance elements are all perfectly done. I'd love to see more of this kind of genre crossing in place of more standard fantasy fare. In summary, a really impressive standalone debut novel that's beautifully written and cleverly plotted, it deserves to be more widely known.

    Dark but optimistic

Liked this a lot. It's got a darker edge than your classic hero fantasy but it doesn't descend into the 'everyone's a nasty piece of work' cynicism that seems the flavour of the day. Most of the characters are flawed people who are doing their best despite being all too human. These are the kind of people I like to read about. add in swords, guns and a fiery winged unicorn, and you're set :)
