  • Death in Kew Gardens

Interesting series, each one better than the last one! Life below stairs with a murder mystery solving cook; her collection of friends and an intreguing rogue!

  • Good historical novel but lacking as a mystery

This late 19th century historical mystery is third in the Below Stairs Mystery series. We follow Kat Holloway, the head cook in a large Victorian household as she attempts to learn who killed a neighbor. The strength of this book is in the historical detail. In particular, we learn about China during this time period and its relationship to the U.K. Also Ashley is quite good at describing all those folks who work for the upper classes. We learn about their relationship with each other, with the “betters” upstairs, and with those outside the household. Even their speech is accurately portrayed. We don’t see enough of this. Too many historical novels in this time period are focused on the rich gentry and noble classes. The mystery is just so-so, rather fuzzy on the details and with a dearth of clues about the perpetrator. Overall it’s a good read for those who like historical novels, not so much for mystery fans.
