  • 560 words of brilliance per chapter!

There are about 560 words per chapter in this book. 560! When I discovered this book in my early 20s, I dismissed it as overly simplistic and too commercial. After all, there were dozens of them! I had no understanding of what a skilled writer Osborne was. So much economy of description, yet engaging with a solid setting and distinct personalities for the kids. Chapter One is so clean and tight. We’re introduced to a bored Jack and his supposedly annoying sister, Annie. She runs ahead. He tells her they have to go home. She finds the tree house. That’s it. Bam! No detailed origin story. No explanation. Annie climbs up. There are books! Jack follows her up. End of chapter one. Each chapter is just like it. Tight. Almost terse. But fantastical. Yes, they are simplistic, but for early readers they are exciting and full of wonder. I wish I hadn’t been such a snob and had bought these books for my kids. I’m so glad their library had plenty of copies for them. I’m shelving this as inspirational because I know I couldn’t write this tight if I tried.
