  • Drayton, unconventional vampire.

I so admire Tony Bertauski's ability to think of a new twist on an old theme and then present it in a way which makes it fascinating and extremely readable. This is definitely the case with 'Drayton, the Taker'. Drayton himself is not sure what he is, he is described as a vampire, but then, how can a self respecting vampire not want to take blood from his victims? He doesn't even seem to have victims, but is present at the right moment as certain people die when he absorbs their last breath and life energy. He is so old that he no longer knows himself how long he's been around. He seems to have developed something very alien to the traditional vampire, empathy with the dying. In Drayton, Tony Bertauski has created a unique character and I am looking forward to discovering more of just where he came from and just what his purpose here is. Highly recommended!

  • A different version of "Death"

Interesting character. Drayton absorbs the last breaths and final life force of Blake (a suicide) and agrees to give Blake's family a final message. Instead of just giving the family the message, Drayton helps them progress.
