  • Fun book

Fearless Scarlett is one of the Maidens of Mayhem, who rescue women from dire circumstances. Priggish Ambrose is Duke of Aylesford, trying to save his brother from a life of debauchery. They're both investigating the disappearance of a seamstress who works nights at a brothel when they decide to join forces. Ambrose relies on his authority as a duke, but quickly learns that in the slums of London, Scarlett's wits and skills are more powerful weapons. Thrust into each other's company, an attraction grows between them. But with the social disparity between them, and a gang of sex slavers out to kill them, is there any hope for love to prevail? This was such a fun book. I love Annabelle Bryant's storytelling style. The characters are well-developed, and the story never lags. This is one of those rare romance novels where the heroine doesn't rely on the hero to rescue her. I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

  • Love vs Duty

Love this regency romance, it has substance, grit and heartfelt love. This "duty-bound" Duke has certainly met his match. I was intrigued based on the blurb but this ended up being way more than I had imagined. Scarlett is a gem, bold, resilient and smart with a selfless compassionate nature. She shakes up the Duke's privileged world and touches his heart in a way he never imagined. It's risqué business, their attraction but their combined expertise make them a great team for the intricacies of the mystery of the unprivileged. I think the maiden and mayhem concept was achieved, anymore mayhem would have been excess. First time reading a book by this author, definitely won't be the last. I am hooked, this was so good I read it twice. I received an advance free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

  • Entertaining book

This was a well-written, entertaining book. Scarlett discovers a seamstress she has been working with has disappeared and, concerned, searches for her. She encounters Ambrose, who is working on solving a mystery too. They join forces to search for clues, while they explore their mutual attraction, and each learn a different point of view from the other. The book was fast-paced and held my interest. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.

  • Exciting, looking to next in the series.

I found this story to be interesting in that this couple definitely came from different backgrounds, yet had the same kind, protective heart. Scarlett was straightforward and honest, though she did keep her secrets. Ambrose had been so wrapped up in his ducal duties that he did not realize how things were in the world around him. With danger dogging their feet, neither Scarlett nor Ambrose backed down from finding out the truth. I loved the heat between them as well as the intelligent and revealing conversations between them. A bit of a slow start, but once it got going, I really enjoyed this ride into the world of the Maidens of Mayhem and look forward to the next one. I received an ARC through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.
