  • Taylor set me on the road to e-book success

When I contemplated e-publishing my fantasy series I was, to be frank, baffled by the choices and the differing technologies. I also had no idea that some of the choices existed. But I was fortunate enough to be an early reader of Allen Taylor’s book, E-book Publishing. Taylor set me on the road to success with clear explanations on how to format and sell my book on each of the largest e-book services. This is not an easy thing to do at first but even for a novice Taylor makes it possible. It gets easier with practice and I actually found one daunting system (Calibre) easier than even E-book Publishing said it would be. I learned each of the different e-book publishing systems, usually by impatiently skipping ahead in the book, getting into trouble, then backing up to re-read Taylor’s instructions. My advice? Go slow. Read. Think. Internalize. Apply the instructions in the book. Then move on to the next publishing service. Within a few weeks, working at Taylor’s book when I had some time to set aside for concentrated work, I published my first novel on Apple’s iBooks, on the big player in the market, Amazon’s Kindle, on the Canadian system Kobo, and created a generic ePub version using Calibre that permitted listings on Barnes & Nobles’ Nook, through Smashwords (the largest distributor of independently published e-books) as well as through any other system using the ePub generic format. I could even sell the book myself from my own web site if I so chose. Taylor did two things for me: First he provided me with the proverbial ‘kick in the pants’ to actually take on something that, at first sight, seemed too complicated to get into. Second, his clear instructions made that effort easy and fruitful.

  • Best e-publishing book I've read

For anyone wanting a how-to and reference manual on self-publishing, Allen Taylor’s E-book Publishing: Create Your Own Brand of Digital Books is a must read and a must have. Using humor and a conversational tone, Taylor’s tome is easy to read and understand. Taylor walks the reader through the ins and outs of e-publishing and explains the intricacies and options available to those wanting to self-publish their work online. The book is laid out in logical sequence and chapter headings are easy to find. The diagrams and illustrations are clear and thoroughly explained. For someone transitioning from print publishing to e-publishing, I found the information practical and useful in formulating a strategy for marketing my novel. Unlike many how-to and reference manuals, this one is interesting and straightforward.
