    Adventure with Heart

I've been enjoying this author's Aether series for a while now, so when I heard that she was starting a new series, I was both excited and a little bit nervous. As a reader, it's easier to stick with the familiar, right? But I figured, why not give it a shot? I'm glad I did!!! This is easily Fry's best work to date. The story takes place in the distant future, after some kind of cataclysm that destroys the world as we know it. It's far enough in the future that a whole new medieval-ish society has formed. (There's no radiation or anything, either. Don't worry, it isn't a Fallout novelization or anything like that.) I don't want to give anything away, but suffice to say that some bad dudes (led by one 'bad dude' in particular) kick Elysia (the title character) out of her comfort zone in a big way, and she has some hard decisions to make. I found it to be a very fun adventure, and I especially enjoyed the theme of hope from despair, of how a small spark of brightness can form in even the darkest of times. It actually kind of resonated with me considering what's going on in our own political world right now, but I feel like this story is really more classic than that. Beyond the really fun ride of the novel, some of the timeless themes left me replaying certain scenes over and over again in my mind after the book was finished. And that is what's great about this story. I found it deeper and more meaningful than the Aether stories, even though the character is about the same age as the Aether girls. Don't get me wrong; it's still a lot of fun, but it adds a certain heart and pathos that makes it very special to me. So, bottom line: I recommend this story fully, and I can't wait to see what future installments in this new world bring!!!
