A lighthearted romance with hidden depths

On the surface, Everything His Heart Desires would appear to be a lighthearted, flirty romance. However it soon becomes obvious that under the veneer of civility and good manners, there lies so much pain and angst that it almost seems impossible for the characters to hold it in. Brett has broken through every barrier in his path to reach his objectives and unfortunately along the way he has trod on toes and hurt feelings. Natalie is one of his casualties although she put on a good face about it and got her own back from time to time. When Brett finds himself at a glass ceiling in his career, he realises that if he is going to reach his goals, he is going to need more than a little luck. Natalie returns home after having been abroad for 15 years a very changed person, both physically and emotionally. When relatives enlist Natalie's help to persuade her beloved grandmother, who hates doctors, to have a medical check up, the Layton family use Brett as their pawn in their game of human chess. This beautiful romance was tender, funny and painful at times. The addition of vintage cars added an upbeat dimension that put a smile on my face. I loved the older characters in the book, particularly Anna, Clara and let's not forget Pharaoh! With Anna's scheming, Brett and Natalie didn't stand a chance and being the master manipulator, Anna gets her way. This charming book is part of a series, the second book is as enjoyable as the first, and can be read as a stand alone.
