Edge of Your Seat Action in Lake Tahoe

This is an action-filled murder mystery. This is a complete, stand-alone story that features some great characters. The plot is intense with plenty of motives and suspects. The reveal at the end is pretty spectacular. I have always enjoyed how this author can weave a story. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.

Great second book in a series

This is the second book in the Aspen Adams series, I haven’t read the first so these characters were all new to me. This can be read as a stand alone novel, as it is a completely new story, although there are a couple of references to the last book, or last case. Aspen Adams is dating Nick Shaper, a Detective for the Placer County Sheriff Dept. Aspen is working as a PI for her aunt Maxine’s detective agency. Although keen, Aspen is still learning the ropes, going dumpster diving, not one of her favourite jobs, but who would enjoy rummaging through someone else’s rubbish, especially if you find nothing of use! What she really wants to do is investigate, but I think she needs to learn a little patience! After all a lot of PI’s spend a lot of time just sitting in cars watching and taking photographs. Aspen’s gynaecologist is found dead, Aspen had had two missed calls from her that morning, but she hadn’t thought anything of it as she was awaiting some test results. It’s only when Nick calls her to say he couldn’t make dinner, that she learned what had happened, she tells Nick of the calls. He tells her not to get involved, but that is like asking her to stop breathing, she just can’t help herself.. My only problem with this bit is surely he shouldn’t be telling her anything, ok it’s a small town so I realise it would be in the news.. Later in the story Nick gets called out to a crime scene and Aspen goes with him to protect him, but he is a police detective, and we have been told he has moved there to get away from high crime rates and murders, so why would he need Aspen to protect him? Sorry but that just bugged me a little, my only gripe I promise. Aspen is also now guardian of her 14 year old niece Candace, who is upset when she hears that the Dr is dead as she had seen her, when she first arrived, from what I can gather. Aspen is also a qualified therapist but has given that up to focus on being a PI. Aspen had got to know Gloria Morning during her last case, at the time Gloria was a reporter, but is now a co anchor for a year old news station KINC. Gloria asks Aspen if she could look into some threatening letters she is getting, these random notes have been turning up professing to be saving Gloria from bad people in her life. The only problem being that after she receives each letter, the person mentioned turns up dead!!! But none of these people have done anything to hurt Gloria, adding to her confusion. Or is she after more attention for herself? This is a well drawn out plot with lots of suspects to keep the reader guessing. I like Aspen and the relationship she has with Nick and want to see more of how that is going to go, Candace seems mature for her 14 years but maybe she has had to be with her mum being a drug addict. This is a quick and easy book to read, I will go back and get the first book to see how things started. But if you are looking for a quick relaxing read, with some gorgeous descriptions of Lake Tahoe that makes you want to just get on a plane and visit. I can certainly recommend this book. For me it’s a cozy curled up in a chair with a cup of cocoa type of read. Fun, great characters, I did guess who was responsible but only from something I picked up on at a. Stage in the book. I would like to thank #Netgalley and #beyondthepagepublishers for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest, fair and unbiased review.

    Highly recommended!

A solid mystery, full of suspense and entertaining. I was happy to meet again the well written cast of characters and I loved the engrossing plot. I look forward to reading other books in this series. Highly recommended! Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

    Great follow up book....

This book is the second in the Aspen series and even better than the first. This story deals with the sudden murder of Aspens doctor. Another body shows up shortly after. Aspen teams up with a local news anchor to connect the dots in this very well crafted mystery story. It can read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading both and then eagerly awaiting the third as I am. Thank you NetGalley for advanced readers copy for review.

FAN MAIL by Daryl Wood Gerber

FAN MAIL by Daryl Wood Gerber is the second book in the An Aspen Adams Novel of Suspense Book series. It’s the amazing and suspenseful story of a string murders that seem to all center around the local celebrity news anchor, Gloria Morning. Aspen Adams is a former therapist turned private investigator working at her Aunt Max’s agency in Lake Tahoe. She has also become the guardian to Candance, her 14 year old niece, after her sister’s addiction to drugs and alcohol. When gynecologist, Dr. Kristin Fisher, was the first one murdered, Aspen took it personal deciding she had to help find out who the murderer was and why they had killed the doctor. Dr. Fisher has called her twice in the very early morning hours before she was murdered, but it went to voice mail. Aspen originally thought it was about her test results, but she wondered if she had answered would things have turned out differently. The fact that Aspen’s boyfriend, Nick Shaper, is a detective sergeant with the Placer County sheriff’s department helped and hindered her investigation. There was a certain amount of sharing of information. However, Nick, worrying about her safety and feeling it was his “job” to solve the crime, didn’t want her to get involved. Their relationship is going smooth but sometimes difficult due to Candance’s emotion baggage from her mother’s behavior and Nick’s alcoholic sister as well as their jobs demanding their time. Aspen’s Aunt Max’s prediction that there would be more murders was right on. Every time there was a murder, Gloria would get a note saying it had been done for her. Scared but not wanting the publicity that she was sure would ruin her ratings, she turned to Aspen to help find out who was sending the notes and why. Since Aspen was determined to find out who had killed Dr. Fisher anyways, she took the case. The murders all seemed well thought out - including weapon choice, executed quickly and with no witnesses. The clues are few – some hairs, some dirt and the notes. However, the list of suspects is long. Who did it and can they finger the right suspect before someone else is murdered? Aspen is narrowing the field, but it seems that with every suspect taken off the list another one is added. Can she find the answer before harm comes to Candance or to herself - again? FAN MAIL is an excellent, well written suspense book that will keep you turning pages guessing and second guessing who the murderer is up to the final reveal. The author will have you loving Aspen. You will admire her for her dedication to finding justice, love her for her warmth towards Candance and her caring ways towards others, and pulling for her romance with Nick. Daryl Wood Gerber weaves this fabulous story giving you all the needed details without making it a blood, guts and gore story which I greatly appreciated. I highly recommend FAN MAIL to anyone that loves a great, clean suspense book that will keep you entertained, loving the characters and keep you guessing. It will also have you waiting with great expectations for the next book just as I am. Although part of a series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. I hadn’t read the first book in the series before reading FAN MAIL and had no trouble at all. However, after reading FAN MAIL, I will be checking out DESOLATE SHORES because I know I’m going to love it too.
