Irish mob hitman is hot and suspenseful

Moira, aka Genevieve, is a British intelligence agent with a secret. One even the agency does not know and now she can finally find out who was responsible for bombing the church the day her entire family was killed. Except that means going back to Dublin to confront the Irish mob family of the man she fell in love with on her job in Boston when she was investigating his uncle’s business dealings there. Lar Delaney thinks she was killed in the bombing that took his brother’s life. There was a lot of backstory to establish to help the reader understand the complex and relationships and history of the families involved and it does slow the beginning somewhat. It is necessary and worth it though because otherwise you won’t be able to follow the faster paced suspense that follows. And you will definitely want to. While Lar is an Irish mob enforcer and occasional hitman, you can’t help but like him. He is not a good person but he does have a code. He never kills women and children and always makes sure his target is actually guilty. He also has a lot of secrets himself. Moira should appear to be a good person but with all her secrets and inability to show emotion, she is the perfect fit for Lars. She isn’t quite as good as she seems. Both have a lot of scars emotionally and have suffered a great deal of loss. Yet in each other, they have finally found someone they can actually be themselves around. Then there is the suspenseful backdrop of trying to solve several old murders, Moira’s and Lar’s families, as well as the more recent one in Boston all before Lar’s uncle pulls the plug and has Moira killed as he believes she is responsible for the Boston bombing. It is a suspenseful race against time and one where it looks like time will run out before they find the answer.

    Exciting Suspense

This suspenseful tale was very well written and had me guessing throughout the story. Moira and Lar were very complex as former lovers who worked together to find out who was responsible for killing her family in a church bombing and killing his cousin and uncle in a shoot out. The mysteries were separate but some things became intertwined. This was an exciting thriller filled with twists and turns. I can't wait to see the next book in this series because there were some loose ends that will carry forward. I highly recommend this book to any that enjoy romantic suspense! An ARC was provided for my honest review.

    Irish mob mystery romance

A lot of mob mystery with a little romance thrown in. Final Target is not your average romance, it focuses more on the mob mystery angle than the rebidding love of Lar and Moira. The story line pulls you in and you can't put it down till you know who's responsible and what happens next. The ending leaves more questions than answers making it impossible to wait for book 2, June seems very far away. I love Zara's Irish books that bring me to an unfamiliar culture without completely losing me in the lingo, a very nice balance.

weak espionage plot but good romance

Final Target is the first story of a romantic suspense series that features the Irish Mafia as its main cast of characters. This particular story contains a complete couple romance (with a happy for now ending) but leaves the plot open at the end for the next story in the series. There is a rather large cast of characters in this story. Though Lars and Moira are the main couple, we are introduced to a multitude of family members (blood and mafia), some of whom will feature in later books in the series. I found this sometimes confusing, trying to figure out who everyone was, how they were related, and what involvement they had in the story. There were certain times I thought that the access to information everyone had was just too easy and not always believable, when I compare it with a general fiction thriller. Similarly, there were times when it was hard to believe that certain facts weren't already known (for example, that Moira didn't know that she had supposedly died in the bar in Boston, or that her dead father had been not such a good guy - as an undercover agent I would have expected her to be very on top of the type of details that would affect her life). The undercover operations and the back room dealings had a lot of twists and turns to them, which made the plot quite interesting. Finding out who was responsible for the bombing that took Moira's family makes up a major part of the plot and we do eventually find out the culprit, though it took a sometimes convoluted path to get to that point (one revelation after another!). As for Moira and Lars's romance, I liked the plot idea that she was presumed dead all this time and that Lars has to adjust to thinking of his initial relationship with her in a whole new light. Despite her deception, now that they are back in each other's lives, the attraction between them is still strong and leads to some steamy scenes. Keeping Moira alive and safe from another assassin (since he's not planning to kill her anymore), finding out what really happened in Boston where Moira was supposed to have died (and where his own brother, and his cousin died in the attack at the bar), and delving into his past and Moira's and how they connect keeps Lars pretty busy! So final thoughts - while I thought the espionage plot was somewhat weak (too many loopholes for it to be believable to me, and that's mostly because I read a LOT of espionage type thrillers when I'm not reading romances), I did like the overall idea of the story, and the romance between Lars and Moira. The ending of this story isn't a cliffhanger, but it will directly lead into the next story, and there are still some questions that need to be answered to complete the story arc. 3 stars.
