    Interesting premise

A good read offering a different take on history. Rings true with the description of the life and times of the period: 50AD. The author calls this genre, alternate history, a what-if-the-steam engine-was-invented-then book. The author writes authoritatively about the mechanics of Heron's designs and draws you into the era with all the turmoil, religious beliefs and socio-political intrigue of a conquered people. A twist in the tale adds spice to the mix. One small suggestion is to proof read it again and corrects a few errors in word usage. Nevertheless, it's a thought provoking and entertaining story.

    Fires of Alexandria

Excellent read with a good balance of history and human interest drama. Many issues such as women's rights and racism in today's society are touched upon in a skillful way.

    Fires of Alexandria

An interesting story moving fast enough not to be boring. I chose to read it as I had visited Alexandria and thought I might relate to the story.

An adventure that's a little of everything

Fires of Alexandria It's hard to pin down the genre of this work. It's an alternate history, but it's also a mystery, a political intrigue, a steampunk, and an old-fashioned adventure yarn. While the novel can be read at a superficial level, it has deeper themes that touch on women's place and value in society, religion, slavery, and even racism. I appreciated that the themes were woven into the fabric of the story and not delivered as boring lectures expressing the author's opinions. The writing is clear, the characters believable and engaging, and the plot logical. The editing was solid. Each time I had to stop reading, I found myself itching to get back to see what happened next. I enjoyed the book so much that I immediately purchased the next in the series.
