Reviewed by Susan Sewell for Readers' Favorite A cynical journalist's travel plans change course when on a whim he visits a prognosticator in the phenomenal sleuth mystery, Florida Man: A Story From the Files of Alexander Strange (The Strange Files) by J. C. Bruce. As a newspaper columnist, Alexander Strange writes about the weird and bizarre. The Arizona paper he reports for is changing over to an online site, and Alexander takes up his uncle's offer to live on his boat in Florida. Since Florida is the state of the strange and unbalanced, Alexander figures it is the ideal location to inspire his column. Just before crossing into Florida, due to unexpected circumstances, Alexander has to take a detour. While waiting to move on, Alexander impulsively enters Madam Jazzabelle's shop to have his palm read. When she takes his hands, Madam Jazzabelle breaks out into a sweat, claims she sees death, and abruptly leaves the room. Normally skeptical, Alexander is stunned and disturbed by her reaction. Is somebody really going to die? Or is it a hoax? The extraordinary murder mystery novel, Florida Man by J. C. Bruce, is an absolute winner! The story is a cunning display of humor and intrigue. When I got to the end of the last sentence of the prologue, I thought, "That woman can write!" There was no way I was putting the book down after that. It is superbly written with engaging and well-thought-out characters. I enjoyed Alexander's outrageous personality and his humor, but of all the characters, I loved Jazzy the most. She is an integral part of the story, and I appreciated how her presence enhanced the plot. The imagery is outstanding, and the plot flows flawlessly from the entrancing beginning to the smashing conclusion. It is so good I can't wait to meet up with Alexander again. For everyone who loves a good amateur detective mystery with a hint of the paranormal, this book is for you!
