    A new series that shines

Jenna Quinn has had a rough time lately so her Uncle has invited her to spend some time with him so she can start fresh. When Jenna arrives at 2 AM she finds the key her uncle hid for her and hits the sack. The next morning, ready to start her new chapter, she heads down stairs to her uncles antique book store and finds him sprawled at the bottom of the steps. Finding that Jenna had arrived at night, with her uncle’s body laying there through the night, the police look at her as their main suspect, Especially after finding out she had been arrested for murder in Charlotte before heading to Hokes Folly and finding that she inherits everything from her uncle. Even though Jenna had been released and charges dropped, she won’t let anyone pin something on her again when she is absolutely innocent. Being new in town, Jenna doesn’t know who was friend or enemy to her uncle, but she soon finds out who here friends are and sets out to seek justice for her uncle and herself. What I love most about our protagonist is that she had a bad experience in Charlotte, but she is not going to let that deter her from living her life and starting over. Jenna refuses to become the scapegoat yet again. No poor me or whining, just her taking action and standing up for herself. You can’t help but cheer her on. I’m looking forward to spending more time in Hokes Folly with future entries in the series.

    Love the secondary characters!

I always love finding the first book in a new cozy mystery series and I was even more excited when I read this one took place at a bookshop. Could there be a better backdrop for a cozy! And Laura Gail Black set up the premise perfectly for Jenna to be able to be an amateur detective when her uncle left her the shop, living quarters above, and a lot of money. While the town where a cozy takes place is important, as well as whatever hobby or food theme is incorporated, for me, it’s the characters that make the novel. If I don’t enjoy the characters, I won’t be coming back for more. At first I thought I may not be returning to Hokes Folly because Jenna really wasn’t doing much for me, and as the main character, that is a must. And the author does a lot of telling instead of showing, which can get boring after a bit. So why will I be reading the next book in An Antique Bookshop Mystery? It’s because of the secondary characters, mainly Mason and Rita. I want to see how Mason grows and I really enjoyed Rita’s warmth. As far as the killer goes, Black does include some red herrings. And I didn’t figure out the killer right away, which is always a plus. I will say though, a lot of the cozies I’ve read lately seem to have a trend going on who turns out to be the killer. Which was fine for the first three or four cozies that did this, but I hope cozy writers go back to having a little more substance and motive behind the killings again very soon!

    For Whom The Book Tolls

Being a lover of the cozy mystery genre, I was excited to read this first book in a new series. Sadly, I was disappointed. I just couldn't finish this book because it actually kept putting me to sleep. There were just too many drawn out meaningless scenes and descriptions. I finally realized that I didn't care who the culprit was, I just didn't want to read anymore. I received an advanced reader's copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

    Loved it!

law-enforcement, murder-investigation, greed, family-dynamics, friendship***** Really good murder mystery with memorable characters. Jenna has already had a VERY negative experience with being falsely accused and incarcerated, so the last thing she needs is finding the body of someone she loves and who believes in her dead in his home and her being accused of his murder by a police detective wanting brownie points to move up further in the ranks. Her uncle's was the first body, and then there's the scammer apparently looking for something in particular. The suspects kept piling up and then there was the next murder. What treasure? I loved it! I requested and received a free ebook copy from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

    Fun book

I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from Laura Gail Black and Crooked Lane Books through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. This was a really fun book. I was able to guess who the killer was about half way through but I didn't care because the characters and story kept me engaged. This is the first book in the series and I am really hoping there will be a prequel in the future because I would love to know the whole story of what happened to Jenna in Charlotte. Looking forward to reading more books in this series, highly recommend this fun, cozy mystery.
