I am so blown over with this story of Lyric......

I am a huge fan of Carrie Ann Ryan to begin with and finding out she was writing a new series in YA had me jumping with joy to read it! I am so blown over with this story of Lyric and her journey to find out who she is. Lyric has always had dreams and they have only been getting worse, or rather more real in feeling. The journey that Lyric, along with Brealynn, Emory, Rhodes and Luken take is long, and has so many obstacles to get through. We are taken through an incredible new world, The Maison Realm, with lands so different and beautiful. I was pulled through this world and cried right along with Lyric. The path is Lyric and her friends travel shows just how fractured and broken the The Maison Realm is, and how they really do need something, or someone, to bring things back to how they should be. I can't wait to see what Lyric will bring in her story next!

Great Start to a New Series

Carrie Ann Ryan takes us on a journey into the realm of Young Adult Fantasy with an exciting new series The Elements of Five, the first book of which is From Breath and Ruin. The story takes place in a new world which consists of complex layers involving mayhem and magic where the author takes the time to describe in depth the world in which this adventure takes place. Lyric has always believed that she was a normal child who has now grown into a perfectly ordinary eighteen-year-old whose head is filled with normal everyday teenage things like fitting in at school, finding her place and engaging with friends and, of course, boys along with all the pressures those things entail. Then after an accident, Lyric starts seeing some things differently and realizes that her nightmares are, in fact, not nightmares but her new reality. This is a magical coming of age story set in a YA setting, which I admit I only read it because I’m a fan of Carrie Ann Ryan's previous work but I’m happy to say that I did, in fact, enjoy this book more than I expected to. The world building is excellent as are the creatures and the characters who grew and developed as the story progressed, as for the magical elements well they were just that magical! I thought that this was a really good beginning to what I think will be an enthralling series with many surprises in store for us, I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I read an ARC of this book and am voluntarily writing my review.

A Great Start To This New YA Series

This was an amazing start to this YA read. I thought the story line was expertly written, complex and very well developed. I felt that Lyric was a wonderful character. She was immensely likable and very relatable. I thought that the world building was stellar because it gave me an immersive "you are there" feel. I loved the blend of magic, prophecy, friendship, war, emotional turmoil and drama. With the battle lines between light and dark drawn and Lyric's life and reality shaken to the core, this book will snare your interest and leave you anxious for the next book in this intriguing series.

    Absolutely fantastic

HOLY MOLY!!! Carrie Ann Ryan you have done it once again, another FANTABULOUS book. I am a HUGE fan of your work but you have blown my mind with this story. I know you are new and worried about writing a YA book but you have done an ABSOLUTE FANTASTIC job. I really don’t know what to say that can honestly do justice with how wonderfully you have done with this book. Lyric thought she was a typical 18 year old stressing about what she would be majoring in college, she never would have thought that her nightmares would become apart of her life. Since an little girl Lyric has always had nightmares of shadowy figures, getting to the point that during the day she is also seeing shadows in the corner of her eyes. Rhodes is the Prince to the Lumière Kingdom and a wielded of Air and water, he and his sister Rosamond who is a Seer have been sent to earth to search amongst the humans to find the Spirit Priestess. The Spirit Priestess is someone that can wield all 5 elements; Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Spirit, she is also the person that will be able to bring the two kingdoms; Lumière (Light) and Obscurité (Dark) back together and end the 500 year old war. After an accident when out hiking with Rhodes, Rosamond and Braelynn, Lyric starts to have all these questions that she believes that only Rhodes and Rosamond can answer. So after discussing her concerns about the accident with her best friend Braelynn they both decide to go and ask the siblings, but before they get a chance to ask anything they are attacked by the ‘shadows’ and life as Lyric knew is never going to be the same. Rhodes, Lyric and Braelynn make a plan to go to Maison to get back Rosamond after she was kidnapped by the Neg (shadows). I was seriously hooked from the beginning of this book all the way to the end, but I was disappointed that it finished. I was sucked in and hooked on every word that I read, I never wanted it to end. Yes I know that there is going to be a sequel as this is just the beginning of Lyric’s story but I wasn’t ready for the book to end. I can’t wait for book 2 to release. Thank you Carrie for what you do and please never stop putting your words down on paper, as the worlds you create are so much better than going on a holiday.
