  • From Friends to Family

Matthias lost his first wife during childbirth, and he's raising three teenagers on his own. He's been married three additional times, but his ex-wives weren't interested in having anything to do with his kids. He doesn't trust himself to move forward with Janine, to go beyond friendship with her. Janine had a disastrous marriage - her ex didn't deal well with her cancer and subsequent inability to have children. She views herself as damaged goods. An impromptu dinner date between Matthias and Janine is a disaster, leading to a misunderstanding, and her assumption of how he'll feel about her past health issues. But an invitation for horseback riding and dinner at his house, with his kids, shows a different side of both of them. As they become closer, she develops incredible relationships with his kids, but not so much with him. She accepts that she's firmly in his friend zone, even as she longs for much more. Janine's assumptions about having children are way off, and they might have had an easier go of things if she had been a bit more honest with Matthias in the beginning. Matthias is a frustrating character, wanting to be closer to her even as he pushes her away. It isn't until he realizes that she's finding a full life without him that he makes a move toward what he really wants - a life with her. Even with his love life in tatters, he's done an absolutely amazing job at raising his kids, who realize how good Janine is for him long before he does. I love the small-town atmosphere, the family closeness, and the friends who are always present and supportive at just the right moments.
