    Thanks for your feedback!

I usually don't leave reviews but...

I must say this book took me by surprise. It was the perfect combo of a great story line with puzzles that I strained to solve: I've never read anything from this author but I have already purchased the next installment. Definitely a great read

    Good Read

This was the first book I have read by this author and expect to read more. Premise of the story is not terribly original, but nonetheless the plot moves along at a good pace and the ending wasn't predictable. In other words, the reader is kept guessing who's who until the end.

    Better than I thought!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I got this book, beyond the usual blurb about the plot. But by the time I got to the end of the second chapter, I was hooked. All of the characters, seen through the titular heroine's eyes, added layers of needed realism to this alternate reality where witches and Fae roam among the norms. The term witches encompasses much more than the run-of-the-mill, generic magic users of other books, ranging from people who see the dead to precogs and other people with such unusual abilities. The Fae, far from being creatures one remembers from the Lord of the Rings series, are creepier and more dangerous once their glamours have been bypassed. And humanity throughout this book is not happy to be sharing space with such creatures. Not everyone hates what has only been revealed during the last half century, but enough do to create tensions between the differing species. Alex Craft is the grave witch in question, the heroine of the novel, and while coming across as clueless much of the time, despite her contacts among the Fae and witch communities, she's tough and comes out of her numerous confrontations mostly intact. She Sees ghosts and shades and is on a first-name basis with Death, who is an enigmatic creature himself and helps her out of certain situations when she needs him. He's an interesting character that I wouldn't mind seeing more of in future novels because of his self-professed revelation blurted out in the heat of the moment at the end of this book. I won't say anything further on this so as not to ruin the surprise and can only hope Kalayna Price will expand upon it as the series moves along. The only problem I have with this book, a minor easily overlooked thing really, is the fact that some of Alex's interactions with the characters in the story seem skewed or off-kilter. It doesn't readily jibe with the characters as we know them thus far. Maybe it has a significance later in the series, but especially the end when Falin, Alex, and Death are interacting during the last couple chapters, the scenario doesn't quite ring true. For me, that scene simply lacked some bit of emotional oomph and made the resonance of that part fall flat. Despite that deficiency, I really like the book and plan to read more of this series, just to see how these characters' lives play out. Thank you Ms. price for giving us this wonderful world to live in. Keep them coming!
