  • Not for me

Cozy mysteries featuring coffee and animals are usually my favorite. I didn’t really like Lana, the main character, at all. She had some rough breaks, but she had a guaranteed job due to her family owning a coffee shop. Instead of being content and grateful, she whined about not being a true crime reporter anymore. I loved Stanley, the murder victim’s dog. He, along with Lana’s dad, were my two favorite characters. Sadly, it’s not enough for me to finish the book and it won’t be enough for me to think about trying the next book in the series. Thank you to Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for the ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.

  • New series alert!

Lana Lewis has come home to Devil’s Beach after being laid off from her journalist job and divorcing her loser ex. Now she’s running the family coffee house and gearing up to compete in a barista competition with her best barista, Fab. When Fab doesn’t show up for work and doesn’t answer his phone, Lana finds that Fab quit and went to work for the competition and heads on over to give him a piece of her mind. The next morning Lana finds Fab’s body in the alley behind the coffee house and vows to find his killer and write an article in homage to her friend. Where to begin? Fab was a man who loved women and that could mean lots of exes and partners of lovers who might wish him harm. How can Lana break the story without becoming the next body found? A new cozy mystery series set in South Florida that will have you jonesing for a latte or cold brew as you read. I found the inaugural entry to be good and the series to hold great promise. Looking forward to my next visit to Devil Beach!

  • A fun cozy mystery!

Grounds for Murder by Tara Lush has Lana Lewis back home in Devil’s Beach, Florida after a series of setbacks. She is now the manager of the family coffee shop, Perkatory. Lana has entered herself and employee Fabrizio “Fab” Bellucci in the Sunshine State Barista Championship. With Fab at the helm, Lana is sure Perkatory will take home the prize. Then Fab quits and goes to work for the competition leaving Lana high and dry. Lana takes out her anger out on Fab at Island Brewnette in front of a crowd. The next day, Lana finds Fab dead behind Perkatory. The forensics point to suicide. Lana knows that Fab would not harm himself and wants to prove he was murdered. Lana puts her investigative journalist skills to work tracking down Fab’s killer. Can Lana find the guilty party, or will she end up the next victim? Grounds for Murder is the debut of A Coffee Lover’s Mystery series. I like that the author took the time to establish the town and our main character. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of Devil’s Beach (I want to visit). The words describing the coffee will have you heading to your local coffee shop for a caffeine fix. The mystery was interesting with multiple suspects and few clues (best type of mystery to solve). We follow Lana as sets out to prove Fab was murdered and find out who killed him. I could have done with less of Lana’s thoughts regarding Noah Garcia (how handsome he is, his big muscles, how good he smells). I prefer a more subtle romance that plays out over the course of the series. I do like the chemistry between Noah and Lana. I am curious to see how their relationship will progress. Grounds for Murder is an entertaining start to A Coffee Lover’s Mystery series. Grounds for Murder is a fun lighthearted cozy mystery with creative coffee art, a precious puppy, a laid-back dad, an eye-catching police chief, a curious crime, and jaded journalist.

  • A Fabulous Beginning To A New Series

Grounds for Murder is the 1st mystery in Tara Lush's A Coffee Lover's Mystery series. Lana Lewis works in her family's coffee shop - Perkatory - as the manager and a barista in the town of Devil's Beach, Florida. An employee, Fabrizio "Fab" Bellucci known for his artfully designed lattes and other things besides, suddenly leaves to take a job at another café, likely scuppering her chances of winning the Sunshine State Barista Championship. When he is later found dead in the alley behind Lana's beachside café, she becomes suspect number one. This book had an extremely intriguing plot and I was swept along with the story from the start. Tara Lush's writing is peppy, sharp and edgy and I loved her portrayal of the main character, Lana a former investigative journalist whom I found to be sassy and determined. I was also impressed by her dad who was a laid back, hippie type of guy and very supportive of his daughter. Complete with a Shih Tzu doggy named Stanley, Grounds for Murder is one for those who like their cozies fresh and amusing and I can't wait to see what's next for Lana. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley and this is my own unbiased opinion.

  • Cute cozy with coffee...and murder

Thanks to the BookTrib Giveaway for a review copy. All comments and opinions are my own. This was a fun, well-written cozy mystery set in the fictional tourist town of Devil's Beach, a small Florida island. Lots of coffee drinks, a hunky police chief, and a barista championship contest set the stage for an inquisitive ex-newspaper reporter who is determined to solve the murder of her former barista who was also a notorious ladies man. I especially liked Lana, the feisty reporter and owner of Perkatory Café, as well as the chief's primary murder suspect. This entertaining novel offers several promising suspects, some quirky characters, a cute little dog named Stanley, and a solid plot. This was a satisfying cozy and I hope there will soon be more mysteries for Lana to solve (and me to read).
