    Cara McKenna delivers!

Fans of Cara McKenna have come to expect that she will lead them into uncharted territory in the world of romance novels and this book certainly falls into that category - in the best possible way. Set with the backdrop of a medium security prison (a first in my experience) this is the story of Eric, an unrepentant prisoner doing time for a serious physical assault on another man, and Annie, a local librarian who has started coming to the prison once a week as part of an outreach program for well behaved inmates. The forbidden attraction Annie feels for Eric is instantaneous - and mutually reciprocated. Eric convinces Annie to help him write a letter that turns out to be for her, evoking a shocking sexual response as his words flood her system and make her want to respond in kind. Thus begins their love story. The letters Eric and Annie write to each other are the key to their feelings and give the reader a voyeuristic view into their relationship. The prison backdrop and the town where Annie lives are harshly realistic in light of the fantasy of the letters. The story is emotionally charged from the beginning and the reader is pulled helplessly along the currents of these emotions, wanting to believe that there can be a happy ending for this couple who have each experienced heartbreak in their own lives. Both characters are flawed yet with redeeming characteristics that make the romance believable. Although the ending was a bit anti-climactic for me, it in no way diminished my overall feeling of joy that these two such different people could find each other amid such difficult and seemingly unattainable circumstances. 5 well deserved stars.
