  • Heart Beat

Heart Beat is a group of five short stories about the medical profession. They are short reads with the first and the last being the most complete. The other three seemed to simply stop, though they did indicate that the characters would have a happy life together. They were well worth the read. • Sweet Daisy by Diane Benefiel Daisy and Will o This well-written story is a sweet rendition of Daisy and Will, two professionals who live in separate apartments located in a Victorian house. Daisy is a teacher and Will is a doctor. He realizes that he is in love with Daisy, but she has reservations due to a terrible childhood. Will romances Daisy and overcomes her reluctance to become a couple. The book has an HEA. • An Unexpected Rescue by Joan Bird Cat and Case o Ugh! Too short! This was such a cute story with snarky humor, and I really wanted to see where the relationship of Cat, a writer, and Case, a game warden/EMT, went. He did admit to himself that he loved her, but not to her—at least, not yet, but it was heading that way. I didn’t understand how she ended up with all of the animals, except the illegal monkey named Monkey and the kitten named Heathcliff. Case called her the animal rescue lady, and she called herself quirky. It was getting good and just ended. • Marci’s Co-Star: A Durango Street Theatre Story by Emily Mims Marci and Jake o Marci, a nurse practitioner, and Jake, a physician’s assistant, butt heads over the treatment methods they employ. Their dislike of each other is in response to a strong sexual attraction. They are single parents with personal baggage that causes more conflict between them. It’s well-written even though it is too short. • Love in the Time of Hantavirus by J. K. Winn Amanda and Marc o Medical Director Marc Sanders and medical student Amanda Fisher are strongly attracted to each other. Marc is fighting this chemistry because Amanda has to go back to Boston to finish her internship, and he doesn’t want to be without her. He doesn’t feel as if they can make their lives mesh, so he is cold to Amanda though she is doing a great job in her rotation at Marc’s hospital. Then Amanda gets sick and Marc must fight hospital personnel who are looking at the bottom dollar line rather than the patient’s health and safety. In saving Amanda, Marc realizes that he cannot lose her to death or Boston and plans to go with her until her education is complete. Sweet story. • Heart Murmur by Elle Wright Angelina and Brett o This story of two busy surgeons who let a misunderstanding almost ruin a happy marriage was well-written and complete with an HEA. Angie saw her husband with another woman and immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion; she started divorce proceedings. Brett was not guilty of cheating, but he was hurt being separated from Angie. After communicating, they were together again, and the worries he had before about money seemed to disappear as he realizes there are bigger worries in this life than money. Very good story.

  • A good collection of short stories

Heart Beat is a multi-author collection of five stories about the lives and loves of medical professionals and first responders. This collection of very short but sweet romance stories is fun to read and a good way to spend a lazy day. I read and reviewed this book with no obligation.
