Facets turn common stones into gems

Young adult supernatural drama isn't exactly hard to find these days. You can't swing a love triangle without hitting a teenage Chosen One (or three). M. Latham's tale taps into a vein of teenage isolation that isn't exactly uncommon, but is done in such intensity that this tale stands out. The world-building is a different twist on the "modern magic" concept, where cell phones and teleportation happily coexist, and the themes deal with belonging, genetics, and righting wrongs amidst the usual teenage angst of first boyfriends and bullying. At times the writing is a bit raw, and the plot takes a few more twists than necessary, but the cast of characters is fleshed out enough to support a series that will hopefully deliver on its intriguing promise.

    A very good story

I was pulled in from page one and can't wait to read the next book. The characters are all well fleshed out and the story had lots of answers but left enough questions to keep me interested in reading the next book in the series.

    Overall, I was impressed!

This book honestly surprised me with its simple yet effective narrative! The characters were often believable and the center wasn't always on romance, like so many other books nowadays are! The plot twists were completely unexpected as well, a great sign of a well thought-out story! However, there were some issues. Sometimes the transitions between scenes were incredibly difficult to understand, and the romance moved far too quickly. We didn't get to properly know many of the side characters, and some issues Leah/Christine faced unfortunately were overdone and became annoyingly redundant. The end tailed off in excitement level, and readers may find themselves frustrated with the out of character actions in the last few chapters. Despite all this, it was an incredibly entertaining read, and I recommend it for anyone frustrated with predictable YA novels!
