    Fantastic historical romance!

As much as I loved Book 1, Highland Crown, I have to admit I love this one more. Still the same all-consuming historical detail that requires frequent reality checks to make sure you're still in the 21st Century, but this one was a little more sweetly focused on the romance. And oh, what a romance! Maisie is so sweet, so perfect for Niall, and oh boy is he worthy of more than a few swoons! An love story for the ages, to be sure, yet it also felt like these were everyday people that we'd be friends with in real life. I was completely swept away, and I couldn't have loved it more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

    Historical Romance

Highland Jewel by May McGoldrick Royal Highlander 2 A mother’s promise should never be broken...even if it takes over two decades to keep. No matter how hard Caroline tried to get back to see her son – she was thwarted – until this book allowed it to finally happen. This book begins with a promise made by a soon-to-be-queen to a son she had before the marriage. Her intentions are good but political intrigue keeps her away. She will find someone to help her bring this about and that man is a man of honor, soldier and so much more! In this book we have Maisie Murray and Niall Campbell meeting when he saves her from the sword of a soldier in the midst of a rally the soldiers are to break up. Maisie and Fiona, Niall’s sister, are active in a reform group working to improve the situation of those oppressed by the English. The times are dangerous with spies and informers working against those who are activists. In spite of the tense situation Maisie and Niall eventually come to an understanding but of course, something throws a wrench in their happily ever after...at least for awhile. This book has some overlapping time with book one in the series and has a number of the same characters in both books. It is not essential to read book one to understand this book but I really did enjoy Highland Crown and highly recommend it, too. This book has murder, mayhem, intrigue, history, love, loss and a whole lot more. The history is there but not the main part of the story...though history impacts more than one person in this book in big ways. What I liked: * Maisie’s strength of character and willingness to work for what she believes is right * Niall’s commitment to family and to what he believes is right. * The romance between Maisie and Niall * The closeness that develops between Isabella, Maisie and Morrigan * Learning how people reacted when Maisie’s true self is revealed * The bad guys getting caught * Caroline being able to keep the promise she made to her son * Wondering who will have their story next...Morrigan or perhaps Fiona or maybe someone else. What I didn’t like: * The bad guys… * The way people in power use power for their own gain (I do wish this would change but it never does) * Having the book end Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Paperbacks for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars

    Highland Jewel

I thoroughly enjoyed Highland Jewel, the second book in Royal Highlander series by Mary McGoldrick; a fantastic historical romance. Maisie spends her time secretly writing speeches for the Female Reform Society and attending forbidden protests. Niall is a retired officer of the 42nd Royal Highlanders and just wants to find a peaceful life with his sister and nieces. Maisie and Niall's story is full of drama, humor, sexy bits, action and cover to cover suspense. I enjoyed reading Highland Jewel and look forward to my next book by May McGoldrick. Ms. McGoldrick wrote a wonderful story that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with interesting (old and new) characters, a swoony romance, political intrigue, and Scottish history. I recommend Highland Jewel to other readers and look forward to the next book, Highland Sword, in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

    Loved this book!

Loved this book! This is a deeply engrossing story of a young woman, Maise, who is in love with a retired military man, Niall. They are caught in a time of great turmoil, as Maise leads a women's reform movement that is in direct conflict with laws. This puts her in the cross hairs of unscrupulous enforcers of the recent laws. At the same time, Niall is being pressured to take a position of authority with these same enforcers. When unimaginable events unfurl, the trajectory of their lives, and those close to them, are completely changed and redirected. I found myself totally immersed in this book and flipping pages just as quickly as possible. The characters had depth and felt real as they came to life on the pages. I found myself invested in their story and wanting them to get their HEA ending. While this is the first book I've read by this author, it won't be the last. I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series.

    duty or love

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Highland Jewel, by May McGoldrick, is the second in the Royal Highlander series. Available 9-24-19, it can work as a stand-alone but I would strongly recommend reading Highland Crown first. The timeline between Crown and Jewel overlap. Highland Jewel is told from Maisie Murray's perspective of events during "The Rising". Once again I'm giving a rare 5 stars. The research and talent it takes to blend fact with fiction so well is to be commended. Our heroine, Maisie, fades into the background on purpose. She plays the part of just another biddable, empty-headed girl. The truth is a far cry from what she projects. She's a political and social activist, dedicated to the cause & aware of the possible consequences. She's so much stronger than anyone knows. She meets her friends brother, Niall Campbell, recently retired from military service. She's put out with him & he can't stop thinking about her. Niall is also strong, determined, loyal, he's a fleshed out complicated character in an impossible situation. He's forced to choose blood or love, who to save & who must be hurt. They spend a lot of the story apart so it's a good thing each can be written independent of the other Up next will be Highland Sword, Morrigan's tale. Pretty sure it will be entwined with books 1 & 2. Looking forward to it's release. Happy reading. #Netgalley #MayMcGoldrick #HighlandJewel #RoyalHighlander #StMartin'sPress #Romance
