  • Engaging, realistic and emotional

Hot Read is one of those books that hooks you early on and you just want to see how things are going to play out, both on the field and off! Brett Gunnels is a former service member who enlisted right out of high school. When he returned, he was taken last in the NFL draft and he's played the role of back-up quarterback to team star Tyler Harris ever since. When Harris goes down with an injury, Gun, as he's known by his teammates, finally gets his shot. Estelle "Estie" Harris is Tyler's sister and she's engaged and runs a financial business with her fiancé, even though she's not terribly happy with her job and honestly, she's not sure she really wants to marry Richard either. Estie is enlisted to help Brett care for his pets while he's on the road and the two form a friendship. While it's clear there are growing feelings between Estie and Brett, there is a lot of baggage both of them are dealing with and they pose plenty of roadblocks. The question is can they let things play out and not try to control them in order to see if things can really work between them? Both of these characters were great. They both were dealing with a lot and yet they had this connection that they just truly "got" each other. The story showcases that sometimes letting go and letting things fall as they may is the best course of action. Also, I was glad that PTSD was a center part of Brett's story given what he had endured while in the service. This was engaging, realistic and emotional. I would definitely recommend picking it up.

  • Touchdown!

Jami Davenport gets a touchdown with HOT READ: THE ORIGINALS (Seattle Steelheads #5). Backup quarterback Brett Gunnels gets a shot at being starting quarterback during the playoffs. Meanwhile, he is falling in love with the current starting quarterback’s sister, Estelle (Estie) Harris. Unfortunately, she is engaged. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult readers. Jami Davenport does a fantastic job with this story. I love the characters. Being an animal lover, I related to both Estie and Brett. Our house is a zoo, so I could easily picture their environments. Brett suffers from PTSD after serving in the Army in Afghanistan. He is a good guy who has been underestimated. Brett needs to build his confidence before the playoffs. Estie is a sweet heroine. She is the sister of quarterback Tyler Harris (SNAP DECISION, Seattle Steelheads Football #2). She is a pleaser, often stuck in the middle of her siblings. Her Fiancé, Richard Michaels, was totally wrong for her. I am glad Brett came into the picture. They are perfect for one another. They face multiple complicated situations throughout the novel that keep the story riveting. I love all the animals in the story. They had unique traits that said a lot for Estie and Brett. Brett’s African Gray parrot, Bongo, was entertaining. I found it amusing that Tyler corrupted his vocabulary. HOT READ is a perfect addition to the Seattle Steelheads series. It was skillfully written and thought-provoking. I recommend this novel to people who enjoy football romances and/or animals. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

  • Entertaining Read

I love my visits to Seattle and I love catching up with the sports teams Jami Davenport has created in the Seattle area and in book 5 of the Seattle Steelheads we get to know returned veteran Brett ( Gun) Gunnels and Estelle (Estie) Harris. When quarterback Tyler Harris gets injured it’s time for Brett to step up as backup quarterback, he needs to carry on where Tyler left off but that’s not an easy task and it’s going to take a lot of trust from the rest of the team as well as Brett learning to trust the calls he makes on the field. Brett needs someone to watch his animals when the team go on the road and it’s Tyler’s sister Estelle who comes to the rescue. What starts as an arrangement soon turns into a friendship but what will happen when Brett and Estie cross that line, what will happen when feelings come into play and will the baggage they both carry make or break them...... Hot Read will captivate you, it’s an emotional read with characters you will fall in love with, it will make you laugh and it will make you hold your breathe as Brett and Estie realise it’s not just friendship they crave. I could put this book down and I wanted more, a sure sign of a great read.
