  • Remembered words

I loved the first three stories in the Daddy School series. Not only did they work as a very long prologue to the series to explain the Daddy School's raison dêtre; in addition they showed strong men who were able to admit that they weren't up to solo parenting and through going to Daddy School met their life partners. The next stories are like spinoffs - the characters from the first three books are there as secondary characters but the story really focuses on the dad, or here the "surrogate" dad, and the woman who comes into his life. Levi becomes DJ's guardian when his sister Ruth unexpectedly dies, never having named DJ's father. When Corinne comes into the story she is annoyed that DJ's presence in the office interferes with her business meeting with Levi. This is a caring story of the development of a three-sided relationship which flourishes because of the lullaby referenced in the title. I couldn't believe it when I realised whose persona was being voiced in italics - it's a really lovely concept and one has to wonder what very small children really understand before they can verbalise their own thoughts. The complication to the story could have easily torn apart Levi and Corinne's growing relationship but it's nothing a couple of Daddy School classes can't fix. The ending is very low key and on par with a happy sigh. It couldn't have a better outcome. An absolutely adorable story and a great story arc concept.
