I loved this quick prequel to the ‘What If’ duet by Nina Lane. We are introduced to Josie at a young age when she meets an older boy in the woods. They strike up and unlikely friendship which continues until Josie starts college. Then when she sees Cole on hot summer night she realizes her feelings for him are more intense than just friendship. Soon they embark in a whirlwind of love and lust that they think will last forever, but will it? Josie was cute and funny, Cole sweet and protective even though the townspeople thought he was a bad boy, Josie knew better. There is a ton of feels packed into this short story and it will leave you desperate for more.

Angst-filled prequel full of young love!

A broken boy and a quirky girl. With characters like only Nina Lane can deliver, I was intrigued by this prequel to the What If Duet immediately. What I loved was the way Josie and Cole only had eyes for each other no matter what the rest of the world thought and how their innocent beginnings with their walks to school only cemented what was to become for them as young adults. Theirs is not easy kind of romance but one where Cole's resentment towards the insincere father he wants to forget, often dictates his moods and decisions. We are left hanging a bit as what I had hoped would be a promising if albeit rocky start only seemingly disintegrates and Josie has nothing left but hate in her mind. This is the kind of beginning I savor, whetting my appetite for what is sure to be a lifetime love story filled with a ton of anguish. So I say: bring it on!! 5 solid stars!
