In the footsteps of Gene Roddenberry

This book is a great addition to the entertaining Lightwave series. It places several of its characters at crossroads and causes them to adapt to their new, life-threatening circumstances. But, what I like best about it is it shows that AM Scott is continuing in the great tradition of Heinlein and especially Roddenberry in using Science Fiction to explore the role of leadership in shaping human lives and achievements. In this novel, the command structure of the previous novels is brought into question by several events begun in the previous books of the series. How the characters adapt and find ways to work effectively together shapes the story into something akin to Captain Kirk or Picard demonstrating that it’s their people skills and not their high-tech weapons that make them living legends. And, like those other writers before her, AM Scott shows that a group of people can be both a family and a military unit; their feelings for each other are just as important to their success as their skills and smarts. The book also introduces new elements that will make book six in the series very important to the Lightwave universe. So, start at Book 1 if you have to but hurry up and read Lightwave: Circini Search!
