    Great read, not her best

Love the way she writes about Chilean history and sentiment towards the dicatorship. Some powerful prose and a nice story, not her best but a pleasant read nonethelesss

    Gritty, unforgiving, captivating, awesome writing

The story is unforgivingly gritty but addictive. It is not often that an author can make a misfit into someone you might have feelings for and want to keep reading. Allende did this for me. Allende is so often very readable in style with a lot of dialogue that helps draw you into the lives of the main players. I liked best the second half and the developing hope for a good outcome. I liked least some of the despair and gritty detail and cheap-value of life in drug-crime but realize that the context was necessary, even if the detail was maybe too much at times. Anyone with a beating heart will love this book. It is not though for the cold-hearted.

Once again Isabel Allende transports you to another world. Maya's Notebook is set in the USA and also on Chilloe an island off the southern coast of Chile. Allende's books are always a little different but well worth the read
