    Keeps you guessing

A lovely mystery set in the country side with it's gossip and pub life. Lots of twists and turns but you have to wait till almost the last chapter to find out who did the murders.

    Murder in My Backyard

I almost didn't read the whole story. I usually enjoy this author and this one just was too anticlimactic for me. Kind of depressing in It's gloominess.

Thoughts on “Murder in My Backyard”

I loved every minute of this book. So pleased we can purchase some of Ann Clevees books. Liked the main character, Inspector Ramsey. He doesn’t want notoriety for his job (though he was treated poorly by his staff in the past) he is a quiet, methodical man learning how to work with his previous staff. By the way, fans of Vera Stanhope mysteries will figure out why Vera calls everyone “pet”.

Engaging tale of a doubting detective

The Inspector Ramsey stories are Anne Cleeves' early work and not in the same class as the Shetland and Vera books. But her fine story telling and convincing characters are already in place. Ramsey is a lonely, small-town cop given to self-doubt and irritability. We pity rather than admire him. Fortunately, as in all this writer's work, the setting and supporting cast are beautifully drawn and the pace is good. The Ramsey stories may be B-list stars but they are a fine way to while away a wintery afternoon.
