    A Difficult Topic

Doyle is a somewhat naive young woman in the thrall of patriarchal institutions. Her deep faith and adherence to the Catholic faith are evident in her inner dialogue, in which she abases herself and espouses her belief that it is her responsibility to use her 'self' to keep her murderous and obsessive psychopath of a husband in check. Dress him in bespoke garb and give him a title all you want, Lord Acton is still a deeply disturbing character. The real question is when does Doyle discover, like every other woman in a relationship with an abusive man, that she it isn't special after all and is instead just another victim.
