  • My Next Play

My Next Play by Carrie Ann Ryan (On My Own #3)... 3 Maple Leafs “I want to be by your side as we figure out the mess that is our lives.” Miles has always been know as the quiet and nerdy roommate. After a car accident took his sister's life, he has buried himself in school work. Miles has crushed on Nessa all through college but never thought he was good enough for her. Nessa is finally starting to get back to normal after her best friend she was crushing on fell for her other friend. She finds herself crushing on Miles, one of the other roommates, but keeps telling herself she can not fall for another roommate. After Nessa goes on a couple of dates that don't go well but the guy does not get the message and tries to hurt her, Miles knows he just can not stand in the background anymore. Miles and Nessa start spending more time together studying which eventually leads to more but someone else has plans to keep them apart. I hate writing reviews like this but I struggled with this book right from the beginning. Between all of the insecurities and the constant woe is me feeling from both Miles and Nessa, I was surprised I actually finished the book. I did feel sorry for Miles and what he went through just before college. Once Miles and Nessa finally came together, their chemistry was off the charts. Stephen Dexter and Emma Wilder did do a good job of narrating the book and bringing the story to life. Genre/Trope... Friends to Lovers Point of View... First-Person Dual, Miles and Nessa

  • Decent Read

I received an advanced reader copy of this book to leave an honest review. I have read many of Carrie Ann Ryan's work and enjoyed them. This is the first book that I have read of her "On My Own" series. It can be read as a stand alone but I'm thinking it would be helpful to read books 1 & 2 so you get the background of the all of the roommates. This book follows Miles, a bit of a hot nerd, and Nessa, a friend who never saw Miles as anything more. In the previous book, it appears that Nessa had a huge crush on Pacey and is now getting over that. She has feelings for Miles but she refuses to put herself in the same situation again of liking one of the roommates and not having feelings returned. Miles has always liked Nessa but he never thought she liked him. Eventually they decide as friends to explore what they have both knowing it won't last since they plan to go to different grad schools. At the same time as this, there is a bit of a stalker in Nessa's life that provides an underlying thread of suspense. Overall a well written book and good story. I can't say it was my favorite work of hers. Felt like a lot of repetition of the same thoughts by the main characters and just not a lot of variety in the work. I did like the underlying suspense in the work to keep you on your toes.

  • Loved it!

Nessa thought she was in love with her bestfriend but he didn't feel the same way & it turnout that that it was a crush. She gets drunk one night because of it & ends up kissing Miles. Miles can't stop thinking about Nessa & the kids she gave him, but won't make a move on her till one night when she gets home & is attacked my a men she went out with! This book is about them finding their way to each other & the events when Nessa is stalked. Carrie Ann at her best keeping you hooked right to the end with a HEA!

  • Learning from your past

Nessa and Miles didn’t mean to have a relationship, but things happen! These two were friends first, and after the recent disaster Nessa made with her best friend, she doesn’t want to take that chance again. Miles has been sitting on the sidelines quietly seeing Nessa, but doing nothing about it. The chemistry between them has them acting ‘just for now’. But as these two spend more time together, they learn more about the other, and they can’t hold back the emotions. There are a lot of them, varied and strong, as neither is coming from a happy place. They feel at ease and calm when with each other and that is both scary and comforting to them both. They figure things out though, and they were a joy to read as they did so <3
