  • Dark, Mysterious, and Captivating

I will start this review by stating that this book may trigger certain readers. Sexual abuse and the trauma it causes are themes to the story. That said, I was not sure what to expect from this new venture in Leigh Bardugo's career, other than I would be swept into a dark world. And she did it masterfully. The story was engaging and mysterious, leaving me guessing at many turns and never being able to predict where the plot was going to go. The setting and world building immersed me, and at times it felt like the story was truly taking place outside our own. The pacing and action were balanced and thrilling respectively. I also loved the magic and the way spells were crafted. The Grays were creepy and unique and I want to know everything about it. The characters are incredible. Dawes is a rainbow of a human, Darlington is going to be everyone's new book boyfriend, and Alex... Alex is amazing. She is a deep character, complex, and wrapped in tragedy. But she is so compelling, so strong, that every time she fights or powers through her pain, you want to see her succeed. I adore her and am excited to see where she will go. So much hype has surrounded this book and it has won countless awards and praise from household name authors. And I agree with everything they said. This is not an easy read. It does not shy away from the brutality of its content or the trauma it leaves. But Bardugo handles the subject matter with honesty and sympathy. She truly is a legend, and I recommend NINTH HOUSE to any reader looking to challenge themselves with content, or anyone looking for a dark, creepy, ghost murder mystery.

  • Hooked from the first sentence to the very last.

From the moment I cracked open this book, I knew it was something special. Bardugo does it again—sweeps you into a new world of magic and violence—and she establishes the order of things pretty quickly (I think it was by 10–12 pages in). I loved Alex and I loved Darlington and Dawes, and I couldn't put it down. Now I just need the sequel. There are several scenes of very graphic violence—not for the faint of heart.

  • Fantastic

I’ve been on the hunt for a while for a new series that would capture me and not be crazy predictable... I found it here randomly and I love this. Time to check the next one and more by this author.

  • Starts slow, worth the wait.

Okay so I freely admit this book starts off slow but boy is the wait worth it. I loved the premise and the main characters, all of them. The ending was fantastic and I would definitely read this again.

  • WoW!

This was such a surprise. All at once a murder mystery and magical fantasy in one. I can see this making a great TV series!
