  • Difficult & Dark

Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan grow up in the same small town in Ireland, but while Connell is athletic and well-liked (though quiet) at school, Marianne is a quiet loner. Despite these differences, they form a deep friendship--and and on-again, off-again romantic relationship--that continues through their time at Trinity College. Both feel like outsiders and always seem to come back to each other. I watched most of the Hulu show before getting around to this book (unusual for me!), and I was pleasantly surprised at how the tone of the show matched the author's writing style: quiet, calm, and direct in the face of serious issues like abusive relationships and suicide. While I did like the writing style and the characters, beyond that I wasn't a fan of this story. I have trouble with dark themes and found myself needing to take breaks from the book.

  • We are!

Interesting read. I liked the entanglement of the lead characters. Was it a relationship? Is it a relationship? We are not only the air we breath, the food we eat, we are the life we lived. You can continuously use the same ingredients and get different results based on the method of preparation. Is anything normal?

  • The hype exceeded the reality

Was looking forward to reading this book due to rave reviews. It wasn't as exciting as I expected, was plodding along in most areas. A character-driven story, it held so much promise, but other than Connell and Marianne, the other characters appeared weak, thinly or less developed, too much of a foil to the main characters. In the end, the main characters were not enough to carry the story satisfactorily.

    Thanks for your feedback!
