  • Fresh, intense, and intimate!

Normal People is a character-driven, classic, coming-of-age story involving the clever, wealthy Marianne and the intelligent, working-class Connell as they embark on an enduring love affair littered with misunderstandings, betrayals, overreactions, and, ultimately, broken hearts. The prose is evocative and controlled. The characters, including the damaged, lonely protagonists, are young, innocent, and vulnerable. And the tightly crafted, witty plot unfolds chronologically seamlessly unravelling all the motivations, actions, personalities, desires, needs, and complex relationships within it. Overall, Normal People is a sensitive, adept, passionate tale that does a remarkable job of highlighting all the universal struggles of growing up, acquiring self-confidence, forging friendships, experiencing love and lust for the first time, and feeling entitled to be loved.

  • Normal People

Well written but it became tedious. The characters were so oblivious to themselves and what was going on. I did not want to finish it after awhile.

  • Witty fluid read

Sally Rooney's writing style really takes the gold here. This is a deep heart wrenching story of two youth navigating the difficult waters of modern day love, while grappling with their own demons. Beautifully written and entrenching. The way Sally develops her characters makes you connect with them in a way many books aren't able to do. Highly recommend!

  • A disappointing read

Having read so much hype about this book I was anxious to read it. I found the book very uninteresting and wonder why so many people have praised it. Neither main character is particularly enticing, and page after page, the story seemed to go nowhere. While I appreciate that the author is telling a story about a youthful generation and how members of this generation relate to each other, I found the story boring. Very disappointing!
