    Delightful and memorable debut novel

Sabrina Ramnanan’s Trinidad comes alive in this lovingly written social satire about thwarted first love followed by scandal and its repercussions. It’s hard to believe this is Ramnanan’s debut – she expertly draws us into the loves, disappointments, and triumphs experienced by our plucky heroine Vimla and her friends and neighbours. I loved the Trinidadian dialect of the characters, which adds depth, playfulness, and wicked humour to this novel. Even after finishing the novel, I remember the rhythm of the dialect as much as the vibrant community in Chance, Trinidad and Vimla’s bravery within this community. Highly recommended.
