A great start for a new cozy mystery series

A great start for a new cozy mystery series Spring, a magickal witch, has a run in with Tristan, chief of police and nonbeliever, when a couple dies under suspicious circumstances. As the story progresses questions arise, the plot thickens, and embracing the truth will be the only way for them to progress to a future. Nyx Halliwell’s Of Potions and Portents is a great start for the new cozy mystery series, Sister Witches of Raven Falls. I love that the characters are unique amongst themselves and their familiars are reflections of their powers. I can’t wait to read more from this author and this series. I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

Of Witches and shifters and murder! Oh, my!

Nix Halliwell is the pseudonym of one of my must-buy authors and Of Potions and Portents, the first book in the Sister Witches of Raven Falls Cozy Mystery Series, was no exception. This paranormal cozy mystery would have attracted my attention even if author had been new to me. Be prepared that while this book has witches and fairies and flowers, it is not a fluff piece. Danger, conflict, and passion are well woven between the family dynamics and the celebration preparations. I didn't not attach to the central characters as quickly as I usually do with the author's book, but I did make a strong connection and really look forward to following where this fascinating new world leads me. I have already pre-ordered the next book in the series.

    Clever and entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed this start to a new series. I loved Spring, her sisters, and they way they embraced their magick and supported the community, even when the community doesn't support them. When a healthy young couple die without obvious cause and with the stink of magick, the new police chief sets his sights in Spring's direction. While Spring doesn't have an explanation for what happened to the couple, she has a great many insights into the man she sees withing the chief. This is a quickly moving tale that was clever and entertaining. I found myself engrossed in the story and flipping pages just as quickly as possible. While this is a stand alone novel, I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series. Put this one at the top of your TBR list. The author is on my must read authors' list.

    Such a fun read!

This was a great start to what promises to be an engaging and entertaining series! Of Potions and Portends is mystical, magical, and a joy to read from start to finish. Although...I will say I was pretty freaked out at the demons. Halliwell is such a great storyteller and I adore all the little details she expressed during this story. From the smell of the flowers, to the touch of her magic, to the heat that rose inside Spring at the sight of Tristan, it was all fantastic! There is a bit of a romance in Of Portions and Portends between Spring and Tristan, the local sheriff. While he is investigating what appears to be a murder, the two of them start to work together and find that they have quite an electric connection. I hope we get more of them in future books! Hoax, who was Spring's familiar was great comedic relief in this story and brought a lightness to the crazy, scary moments. I also loved getting to know a little about Spring's sisters in the book and look forward to more stories! If you are looking for a fun, sometimes spooky, cozy mystery, give Of Portions and Portends a read!
