    Fun start to new series

I love hockey in general and therefore enjoy reading hockey-centric romances, especially when I know the author(s) loves the sport as much as I do. When I saw Miss Gale and Miss Vaughn were teaming up to co-write a hockey series, I was stoked. Then I read the blurb. The teacher/student dynamic in romances makes me uncomfortable, so I’ll admit seeing it made me hesitate, but as a big fan of Miss Gale’s, I decided to give it a chance anyway. After reading two books by this author duo, I have to say they write fantastic, dynamic characters who grab and hold my attention cover to cover. As much as I was concerned about the teacher/student relationship, the way it played out didn’t make me feel awkward or diminish my interest in this couple and I actually liked the way the authors approached and resolved this conflict. Actually, considering this book dealt with the common plotline of a closeted pro-sport player and the ensuing conflict of him choosing whether or not to come out, the teacher/student aspect offered a pleasantly different focus. The chemistry between Tristan and Sebastian was incredible, with a perfect shift from the initial lust-driven physical attraction to a deeper emotional connect that made it realistic and impossible to ignore. In fact, the chemistry was so intense that, despite not being crazy about the alpha/beta roles this couple took on in the bedroom, I couldn’t deny they were ridiculously hot together and perfect for one another. This happens to be the second release by these authors that employed a sexual dynamic outside my comfort zone. And yet, the fun, fast-paced dialogue, great primary and secondary characters, and enjoyable stories ensure I’ll read whatever it is they release next. *Reviewed for Alpha Book Club*

An emotional and sexy hockey romance!

Tristan Holt, a defenseman for the Atlanta Venom hockey team knows that he needs to keep his eye on his studies, and not on his sexy Puerto Rican sociology professor Sebastian Cruz. It’s a good thing it’s a short course because he doesn’t think he’d last any longer without giving in to his impulses, especially when he gets the impression that Sebastian might not turn him down. Sebastian is on his way to tenure, and keeping his reputation squeaky clean is a must. When Tristan gets up the nerve to express his interest, Sebastian is clear that nothing will happen while Tristan is in his class. But when the final grades are up, he takes Tristan up on his offer to meet and see what happens. One steamy night together and it’s clear that they have a connection. But Tristan isn’t out to his teammates and isn’t sure that he’s ready to be the gay poster boy of the NHL. And Seb knows that he won’t be satisfied for long remaining a secret. Can they find a compromise that will give them the happy ever after they want with each other? This one scores a goal with me! It has all the elements that I expect and enjoy in a hockey romance. There are some great on ice action scenes, as well as important locker room conversations. Tristan’s gotten so good at hiding that he’s gay that he struggles to confide in his friends, even the close ones, but as he gets closer to Seb, he knows he doesn’t want to keep it a secret forever. Coming out to his parents is the first hurdle, a stressful endeavor on its own, which had me as tense as Tristan! The authors do a great job of balancing the more emotional scenes involving his family and teammates with the easy-going banter of the guys on the team and their nights out. Though Seb and Tristan initially connect due to their smoking sexual attraction and kink preferences (let’s just say the professor/student thing turns them both on), it’s not long before they find themselves looking forward to daily non-sexual interactions as much as the steamy sex that they both enjoy. While they agree to keep things a secret for the time being, Seb makes it clear that it’s a non-starter for a long-term relationship. He’s been out as a gay man for years and won’t go backward. This puts a lot of pressure on Tristan, especially as he starts to care for Seb. The second half of the story deals with the more intense emotions and situations that result from their continuing relationship. The conflict is believable, and its resolution is well done, leaving the reader very satisfied with their happy ending. Plus, there are several secondary characters introduced that I can’t wait to read about! Off the Ice delivers an emotional and sexy romance well worth the read.

    A great read

4.5 Star Review of Off the Ice (Hat Trick #1) by Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn Both Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn are new authors to me. I really like enjoy reading hockey stories and the premise for this story intrigued me. This is a MM story and one that was extremely well written. Tristan is an elite hockey player who is concerned about becoming the first hockey player in the NHL to come out. When he meets Sebastian, his sociology professor, those fears end up as a very real possibility as Sebastian is out and proud and Tristan is wildly attracted to him. This is a beautiful love story, full of heartache and angst, and about finding the strength to overcome fear and prejudice. I really liked both Tristan and Sebastian and really wanted them to get their happily ever after. I will certainly looking for future books from Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn
