    4.5 stars- Drama and suspense

If you’re into romantic suspense at all, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Miss Kingsbridge’s Seven of Spades series…and for good reason. This series routinely puts me on the edge of my seat and scarcely lets me back off it for the course of the book. These books never fail to surprise me, and I often find myself obsessively reading to discover what Levi and Dominic will face next in their quest to solve a crime while trying to uncover the identity of the Seven of Spades serial killer. Since each book contains its own case, there’s no risk of things getting bored or too repetitive. However, considering the long-term plot of the serial killer case, Dominic and Levi’s relationship, and the multiple secondary characters who play active roles in each book, this is definitely a series that must be read in order. One-Eyed Royals was especially interesting because it picks up with Levi and Dominic at odds with one another as Dominic struggles to get a handle on his gambling addiction. It’s always risky to cause severe relationship angst with an established couple and this novel is definitely filled with it. However, I thought it only added to the plot, giving the characters and their relationship a bit more depth than it had before without feeling manufactured or overdramatized. In fact, the degree of discomfort I felt reading Dominic and Levi’s struggles in One-Eyed Royals demonstrated just how invested in the characters I’ve become and how well the author was able to bring their emotions and pain to life. Although it’s always hard to watch characters we love make “bad” choices, I appreciated that Kingsbridge didn’t make either Dominic or Levi infallible. Over the course of One-Eyed Royals, we see both men fall and take less than ideal paths, but that also provided the opportunity to see the strength of their characters as well as their love for each other. All the credit to this author, because four books in and the Seven of Spades series isn’t showing signs of repetition or slowing down in the least. If you like drama, suspense, and action, this is one you won’t want to miss. *eARC received via Netgalley. The author and publisher had no influence over this review*
