    Balogh at her best

This is Mary Balogh at her very best, or at least the best of what I love about her: Two wounded but decent people trying to play the hand they've been dealt, finding first friendship and eventually love (and healing) together. Along the way, events conspire to make them face their deepest fears and hurts, wrongs are righted and/or explained, and relationships on many different levels are mended. Approaching middle age myself and dealing with aging parents, I particularly enjoyed the aspects of this book that deal with the relationship between adult children and their parents, as well as the change in perspective we gain as we grow from childhood, to young adulthood, to middle age. And a bonus, if you've followed Balogh's books for years as I have, is that many of her most beloved characters are mentioned or even make cameo appearances, without taking over the story. This novel was a real treat and one I expect to enjoy again and again. I'm glad there are two more books to come in this series!
