  • Loved it, will wait patiently for more!

*contains no spoilers* I bought this yesterday soon after release. Stayed up until 11pm to finish in a single sitting. A strong contender for my new favourite series by this Author (strongly recommend the Witch and Wolf series if you like this one). Nicely developed characters, plot twists, an shadowy plots (who is the bad/good guys/girls - are you sure?). While this is a first in series it does have a form of conclusion that doesn't just leave you hanging in the middle of major plot development. Plenty of long arcs to be developed over the course of the series. Only complaint is I am nearly finished this author's back catalogue and reality is the publishing schedule is crazy hectic (THREE more books due in the next couple of months) so I will have to be patient while she takes a well deserved break. No-one wants burnt out authors and incomplete series!

  • Try it!

I found this book to be a fun tale of magic and intrigue. This is the first book in a new series by Blain, and I am looking forward to future releases. If you liked any of her previous works, please give this a try.

  • Perfect

I enjoyed the fact she was able to fool so many for so long. She has Agra in brought out an aspect of life that we should be aware of that is not what we would want. Her books show the way we could end up if we are not careful. After all life imitates art, or in this case science fiction/fantasy.

  • The worst of Blain's bad habits

If you're looking for an escape from real life, this likely isn't where you want to visit. While elements are interesting, this is a bleak, depressing, uneven world (trains but few nails or bullets?) in which engaging characters are introduced then never seen again or suddenly dropped. Certain words or concepts are repeated, some never explained, others detailed over and over again. A huge, tragic plot in which hundreds of people die daily is discussed with no urgency whatsoever (in a hot tub!) and not resolved within the novel. The main character describes an ability she has which could/would cure her but it isn't made clear if she actually does it, or if not, why not. When reviews of R.J. Blain's books say they need another pass through an editor, this is what they mean.

    Thanks for your feedback!
