  • Unique, tender, and thrilling!

Outlawed is a compelling, adventurous tale featuring Ada, the young daughter of a midwife whom after being unable to bear her husband a child flees her hometown, to rumblings of witchcraft, to a convent run by nuns before finally settling and finding a home as the doctor for the notorious outlaws, non-binary, Hole in the Wall Gang. The prose is rich and expressive. The characters are strong, determined, passionate, and loyal. And the plot set in the wild west during the mid-1890s is an intense, fast-paced tale of love, life, loss, bravery, strength, loyalty, danger, gender neutrality, nonconformity, gunslinging, violence, and survival. I have to admit that I didn’t know what to expect when I started Outlawed, but North did such a wonderful job of blending a classic western story with such an original, alluring, feministic spin that I was not only left highly entertained but incredibly impressed.

  • Unfortunately dissatisfied.

While the story was imaginative, I just didn't find it to be very well written or planned out in terms of plot. None of the characters are particularly likeable, many of the events seem to be contrived and predictable. For me, the ending was the worst. It just STOPPED, like the author got as tired of writing the book as the reader got of reading it. The only real reason I gave it the three stars that I did was that I feel the Western is a long-overlooked genre that deserves a re-discovery and the author's choice of word usage and descriptiveness were excellent. If she were writing poetically its a slam-dunk hit, but for fictional plot and tense it was poor.

  • Slow but moving

The story starts off very interesting. It does lose momentum in the middle but i enjoyed staybg with Ada, the protagonist. Its an interesting read!

  • Great!

This book was a great fast read, and explored so many important topics! However, I feel like it ended super abruptly and left too many open ends.
