  • A winner

Great story. Like a “Gone with the Wind” novel about Korea and Japan. The writer vividly describes the life conditions in the different time periods and how families have to mix with the new customs and ideals but still treasure their heritage. An educational read about the plight of the people of Korea. Absorbing plot, educational and highly recommended.

  • good idea, not completely successful

I really enjoyed the idea of this book - learning about the Koreans in Japan over the decades. It was more formulaic than it needed to be, with the obligatory sex scenes thrown in and not enough description. The writing was decent but not wonderful. I wanted to like this book more than I did.

  • Pachinko

A lovely novel about Korea & Japan. Very historically informative. The characters are restricted in their lives because they are Korean. They struggle for survival in their own country, then emigrate to Japan where life is no better. Japanese restrict their lives, show much disrespect even into recent history- 1990. I was caught up in the struggle of being Korean & wonder how Koreans manage to this day.
