  • Unique Story!

I'm not sure I would have ever stumbled upon this gem if it wasn't for seeing this being recommended and compared to another book I loved. I actually don't think it's similar to that book because this was just too unique on it's own. As far as I know, there are only 3 books in the series. It's good to know that because the romance part of this was very slow. So slow that the hero and heroine weren't even in the same vicinity for some of this book. For some of the other part they were...well let me just say, they might as well have not been in the same vicinity. I'm vague only because I don't want to give away all Shae's secrets. Don't let that deter you. Even thought the romance was very slow in this first book, there is much to keep your attention. Shae was a unique heroine and had me completely consumed in this book. I really enjoy strong, smart heroines and you get that with Shae. She's very cunning and that really had me riveted to this story. Fallon is just as good of a reason to love this book. He's a warlord and head of his clan. He is also very smart and cunning. He's trying to find a better way for his and the other clans to co-exist. Not everyone wants that change and attempts on his life has proven that. What I really loved about Fallon was that he is pretty obsessed with Shae and has proven that he will have her against all odds. As much as I was looking forward to him and Shae finally getting together, my love for Fallon was in jeopardy of falling with his treatment of her. You understand why he needed to do some things but then again, I can't stand for a woman to be treated with disrespect. The disrespect wasn't horrible. In the scheme of things, it was very mild but up to this point, she had proven herself over and over to all the men in her life and was constantly questioned or treated like she was dumb. That just got to a point where I was getting really over it when things finally shifted for her. So that doesn't exactly fall all on Fallons shoulders. This was a very created world building with fascinating characters. Book 1 did not end on a cliffhanger but you can also tell it's not the end of their story. Since we finally see them at the point I wanted to see them at the end, I'm excited to move onto book 2 to witness the next level of Fallon and Shae's relationship.

  • A must read for Fantasy and Post Post-Apocalyptic

I really liked this series, so much that I am actually doing a review, which I don't do much. The fantasy world is well built and characters fascinating and believable. The storyline is intriguing and kept my interest the whole way, and the romance is slow build for the first book, which works perfectly for the characters and the situation. I love Shea. She has a good heart and, like most of us, is lonely and still working out who she is. The first three books are the first story arc, and the fourth is it's own story but reading the earlier stories gives you necessary context. This story is set in a fantasy world which is not in the hey-day for that world, but at a time well after an apocalypse that destroyed what would be classified as a science-fiction setting. This is not Earth, but a fantasy world. The history is well built and believable, the situation well contrived, and the characters interesting. All in all, I would definitley guarantee it for anyone who likes a world you can truly immerse yourself in that fits the fantasy adventure genre. There is romance, but the romance plot weaves equally with the adventure plot, if not slightly under it. This series is about how much a person can change their world if only they are willing to take the risk and use their differences fully.

  • Fantastic read

This book was excellent. As with another reviewer, I was recommended this through the Ilona Andrews website. I'm reading the second now.
