Short and devoid of any development for characters

This story was so short I read it in, no joke, 10 minutes! While I understand this is a prequel to introduce the characters for the authors Damaged Hearts Series, it felt so rushed that I don't feel I actually got to know the characters. And while I also understand that these characters are teenagers, I couldn't stand that Emma was so naive. While her father was going through his illness, she allowed her mother to control her emotionally knowing how her mother felt about their social status. As a whole, I have to wonder what the point of this prequel was. Although I haven't read the first book in the Damaged Hearts series yet, I'm not sure that the prequel lent anything towards developing and giving readers a better understanding of the characters.
