  • Loved the characters and the language

I am so excited to have found this book, and the whole series! I'm not normally a huge romance reader, but these characters are so compelling. The way they interact, you can tell they're fully-realized characters, and that the author is thinking two or three books ahead. You know they're going somewhere, and you really want to know where they're going. I loved how their relationship evolved, and the sex - well, we should all be so lucky as to be having such loving and imaginative sex. Highly recommend these books to anyone with an open mind and a passion for smart characters and fabulous writing.

  • Captivating books.

I loved reading M.Q. Barbers books. It's not for everybodies taste, but I understand their love and livestyle and can imagine what it could be like. For me it was a bit difficult to read, because I'm dutch and it is written in a kind of oldfashioned style. But I can recommend reading it, if you are openminded enough.

  • Buckle up for a great start to a series

This is maybe my 3rd re-read of Playing the Game, which I'm doing to put Tuesdays with Jay, book 2.5 which I received as an ARC in context. That being said, it's been at least couple years since I read it last and I enjoyed it as much as I did all the other times. We only have Alice's POV through the series and in this first book, we see her internal struggle as she comes to terms with what she wants in a relationship. She's comfortable with sex and doesn't really place a lot of emotion into it - sex does not equal love to her, in fact, she rejects love because she doesn't believe in it. Relationships are just a means to sexual release and as soon as they guy has expectations beyond sex or catches feelings, she cuts him loose. Henry is very opaque to Alice so we don't understand his motivations or how he actually feels while Jay is the effervescent, eager-to-please puppy dog and she starts to fall for both of them despite herself. This first book ends on a rather anti-climactic cliffhanger that's to be continued in Crossing the Lines.

  • Love, Love, Love the Three

Playing the Game by M.Q. Barber is one of my to go books when I'm feeling blue, or when I don't know what to read next. Alice, Henry and Jay never disappoint. Playing the Game is book one in the author's Neighborly Affection series and is not a standalone. You must read the books in order. Reading order: Playing the Game; Crossing the Lines; Healing the Wounds; Becoming His Master; Finding Their Balance. M.Q. Barber is a masterfully crafted a feel good story with twists and turns that kept me at the edge of my seat from the beginning till the last word. I was glued to the pages and I can't get enough of the characters and their way through the jungle of emotions. While Henry is the seemingly fearless leader, Alice and Jay are eaten by self-doubts, rooted in ther pasts. I highly recommend the book and the series and wish I could give more than 5 stars.
