    Disappointing, unbelievable characters

I enjoyed the first two books in the series. They're not destined to be classics, but they're fun. But this last book really disappointed. The quality of the writing is maintained, but the characters become highly implausible. I won't put detailed spoilers here. Key plot points are driven by character's deep moral concerns, and yet the ethical calculus that drives their decision making is childish to the point of implausible. For example, one character won't risk a single life, but is happy to gamble on the extinction of humans. I finished only because of falling prey to the sunk costs fallacy, as I thought about how much time I'd spent reading the start of the series.
