  • Exciting

I feel like it's been a while since we've seen Rafael, and I've missed him. Yes, he's arrogant, but that's kind of par for the course with most of Anita's men, and I've liked the back and forth between the wererat king and Anita since he first showed up in the series. I've been a fan of the Anita Blake series since it all started, so it's safe to say I'm thoroughly invested at this point. This 28th book in the series is a bit shorter than the norm, but we do still get quite a bit of the relationship angst that has been an ongoing theme for some time - or maybe that's relationships angst? Either way, it's there as well as Anita's indecision. Granted, she's always been conflicted, but this is a strong woman who only gets stronger with each new big bad she faces, and with so much growth over the years, I would've expected some improvement there too. And that lengthy issue over something as simple as walking into a shower room combined with all the discussion in the hallway is the only reason this one got 4 instead of 5 stars - because the last half of the book was exactly what I was hoping for. It was exciting and dangerous and even creepy. It was also fast-paced and frantic, which means I didn't stop turning pages until I'd read the last line for the whole second half of the book. Another plus is the page time for Jean-Claude. It's not as considerable as I would've liked, but given that this is Rafael's book, it's a fair amount. I'd say if you're a long time fan of the series, this is one you'll want to read despite needing to wade through the angst of which lover might get their feelings hurt and how Anita can avoid doing that with so many. So, it was good to catch up with Rafael, and I hope to see more of him in the future. It was also nice to see a new Anita Blake book so soon after the last one. The characters and the world Laurell K Hamilton has created are still hanging on tightly, and I'll be anxiously waiting for whatever's next.

  • Disappointing

Very disappointed with this book. Short, and not much on plot, but a great deal of “therapy-talk”, it’s as if the author has run out of actual story to tell. Instead, we get a mishmash of events, supposedly connected and yet weirdly unconnected, with an ending that is disjointed and unsatisfactory. Hamilton’s earlier books were full of description and plot, now it’s mostly angst over Anita’s sexual preferences. I certainly hope the series improves in the next book.

  • Mixed feelings

My feelings are a little mixed with this book. There were some things that I really liked about the book but there were also things that I didn’t care for at all. This is the 28th installment in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series and I have read most of the books in the series. I am the first to admit that I haven’t loved them all but I haven’t quite given up on the series just yet. I was actually pretty excited when I found out about this book. As a long-time reader of the series, I consider myself a fan of the title character in this book and couldn’t wait to see Rafael as the main focus of the book. I really liked learning about the wererats and seeing how things worked in their community. Rafael is facing a serious challenge and I really wanted to see things work out in his favor. There were some things that I didn’t enjoy quite so much. I love action in books and this book had some of that and I really enjoyed those sections. Unfortunately, it sometimes seemed like the characters would have to talk everything over at great length before anything could be done. At the start of the book, Anita and Rafael decide that they want to have sex. Okay, great. They spend so much time talking about where they will have sex and how they will do it that by the time they actually got around to it, I didn’t care anymore. It seemed like 2/3 of the book was the characters talking about what they would do and the other 1/3 was them actually doing those things. I really would have loved less talking and more doing. Kimberly Alexis did a great job with the narration. I think that she does a great job with the entire cast of characters and I like the fact that she had a very distinctive voice for each individual. I thought that she had a very pleasant voice that was easy to listen to for hours at a time. I do believe that he narration added to my overall enjoyment of the story. I would recommend this book to fans of this series. I don’t think that this would be a good place for new readers to jump into the series but fans of the series shouldn’t miss this one. I received a digital review copy of this book from Berkley Publishing Group via NetGalley and purchased a copy of the audiobook.
