    A cliffhanger

This book, while maintaining the humour, sexiness and all-around good writing that marks Buroker's style, is by far the most serious book of this series. We see Ridge - now promoted to General - share some insightful and guiding words with Cas, still grieving and punishing herself for her role in Apex's death. We see Tolemek likewise trying to bring Cas back to herself, and him. We see Ridge sharing some of his past with Sardelle - a past that reveals one particulr loss that has shaped his life and made him strive to be a better leader and better person. We see Cas preparing to make the ultimate sacrifice, not out of despair or self-flagellation but out of love for her friends. We see Sardelle winning allies by using her gifts to heal and, through her selflessness, convincing potential enemies and antagonists that she deserves their support. The book contains all of Buroker's classic trademarks: epic battles, countless new obstacles being thrown into our protagonists path making the odds seem almost insurmountable, and flirting an innuendo between the main couples. But this book also has a deeper pull as we see the characters' relationships mature and their personalities develop. And, unlike most of her other books, while the main plotline is neatly wrapped up, this instalment also leaves us with a major cliffhanger. (Thank goodness the next in the series is out now, so you won't have to wait to find out the resolution!)

    Another great installment

Another great installment to an enjoyable series. I have been really looking forward to more about Cas, as well as the dragons, and this book does not disappoint.
