    Quick and thrilling

The books is well written, fast paced and smart. The story evolves quickly and you won't have time to even get the slightest bit bored. I finished it in a few days and just wish I could have made myself not go through it quite so quickly. The main character is strong, knows her own mind and is inspiring. I can't wait for the next one to come out!

    Surprisingly different and thoroughly enjoyable

I wasn't too sure what to expect - an arabian, western, magical fantasy- it could have turned out badly, but Ms Hamilton pulled it off beautifully. It was surprisingly different, and I did not see the twists coming at all. I enjoyed the every page and can't wait for the next book.

Great adventure with a strong heroine

Amani doesn't own anything: as a girl, even the clothes she wears are the property of her nearest male relative. In fact, she's technically his property, too. And with the threat of marriage looming, it's more important than ever that she gets out, now. She's aiming to go to Izman, the capital: a place she imagines to be as unlike her hometown of Dustwalk as possible. But when the shooting contest she hoped to win goes horribly wrong, she makes the acquaintance of Jin, a foreigner - and ends up fleeing the military at his side. But Jin has many secrets, including some of which are actually about her. Amani is a strong female character, in spite of the restrictions imposed upon her by her upbringing; at the same time, she is not quite prepared for what it will mean to leave her small home town behind. As her plans change, she is forced to question what it is she really wants, and even who she really is. Impressive world-building, as magic, mythology and politics collide to create conflicts that include a rebellion, genocide, and even a modern-day arms race.
